Discover the culture of Badagry
A town where history meets the Atlantic
Badagry is a coastal town in Lagos State, close to the border with the Republic of Benin. From the eighteenth century it was one of West Africa’s principal ports of the transatlantic slave trade — a history preserved today by the town’s heritage museums and memorial compounds, and remembered at the Point of No Return on Gbẹkụ Island.
The town also holds firsts: in 1842, Christian missionaries landed in Badagry and preached their first sermon on Nigerian soil, an event still marked in the town. Between lagoon and ocean, fishing communities, seafood, palm-fringed beaches and an annual festival of masquerades, music and boat races carry the culture forward.
